ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Exeter Contemporary Open is an annual open submission exhibition, established in 2006 and hosted by Exeter Phoenix, a busy, multi-artform venue and contemporary art space situated in Exeter’s historic city centre. The exhibition aims to provide an important national platform for contemporary visual art with an emphasis on supporting emerging talent alongside more established artists.

SELECTION PANEL
Jes Fernie
Jes is an independent curator, writer and lecturer interested in the social, political and environmental context in which art is made, situated, and viewed. She recently published a book about failure, vulnerability, and things undone and curated a major contemporary sculpture exhibition at MK Gallery in 2023. Since 2017, she has been curator of Råängen, an award-winning programme of commissions, buildings and propositions in Lund, Sweden. She is a lecturer at Central Saint Martins in London, and visiting lecturer at universities including the RCA, Royal Academy Schools, the Slade and Goldsmiths College.
Tania Kovats
Tania is an artist and educator based in the U.K. Her practice explores the ways that culture negotiates how we connect to the natural world and embraces drawing, writing, sculpture, installations and large-scale time-based projects, often working in the public realm. Her works are held in both public and private collections in the UK and abroad and she is Professor of Drawing and Making, University of Dundee.
Matt Burrows
Matt is the Curator and Gallery Manager at the Exeter Contemporary Open host venue Exeter Phoenix, a multi-artform contemporary arts venue in Devon, UK that specialises in working with emerging and mid-career artists. He has over 30 years’ experience working with contemporary art in project management, exhibition making and curating roles, across commercial, public and community settings, alongside working on a variety of freelance consultancy projects, mentoring and lecturing roles.

£500 Additional Award
£200 Audience Choice Award
The judging panel will select awards once the exhibition has been installed and these will be announced/presented on the opening night. The Audience Choice award will be announced in the final week of the exhibition, as voted for by the visiting public.
